2023 Volvo XC90: Everything We Know So Far. The future of all Volvo vehicles is electric. The largest model will get a zero-emission engine after all others. The evolutions started with XC40 Recharge and XC60 is the next EV. The new motor will be the highlight of the next-gen series, which some fans see it coming with the 2023 Volvo XC90. Still, it is not likely to happen so soon. A smaller XC60 is also waiting for the electric version, and there are a couple of new projects started by Volvo. Before XC90 becomes all-electric, we will see XC20 and XC100 in the crossover SUV lineup.
The redesign, on the other hand, could take place. The Swedish company needs to update the look of its largest SUV (at this moment). The last facelift happened in 2017. The new generation is possible to start with the 2023 Volvo XC90, but the electric powertrain won’t be there until 2023 or 2024. On the other hand, T8 PHEV remains part of the offer, as well as the conventional T6 configuration.
Exterior and interior will suffer the most modifications. The 2023 XC90 remains a seven- or six-seater. The trim level lineup is bringing old names, but new features and accessories. The biggest question is about the Polestar model. This Volvo’s subsidiary is developing its own electric SUV. It is less likely to see it as part of the XC90 lineup.
The current generation of Volvo’s flagship crossover has been around for about seven years, so it’s no wonder that the Swedish manufacturer is working on the replacement. Allegedly, the new generation will come in 2023, so we will call it the 2023 Volvo XC90 for now. Judging on all kinds of unofficial reports, there is a lot of new things to come.
From what we can read about the new generation, one of the biggest novelty will be the capability of completely autonomous driving. Of course, we count on a completely new design as well, including a completely new platform and new powertrain options, including an all-electric version.
2023 Volvo XC90 Gets Fully Autonomous
As we’ve just mentioned, one of the biggest novelties for the 2023 Volvo XC90 will be completely autonomous driving. The Swedish manufacturer has already prepared lidar hardware from Luminar, which is a pack of sensors that’s pretty much everything one car needs for fully autonomous driving, at least when it comes to hardware.
On the other side, the software part doesn’t go that smoothly and the latest reports suggest it won’t be ready for the initial launch. It would rather come as a kind of software update, which will be available for download in the future. Simply said, if you buy a 2023 Volvo XC90, you won’t be able to use this system but once the software is ready, you will be able to download it and enjoy this kind of transportation.
2023 Volvo XC90 Redesign
Of course, the new system of autonomous driving won’t be the only big novelty for the 2023 Volvo XC90. We are about to see a complete overhaul, which will bring a completely new design. First of all, the company has prepared a completely new platform, the second generation of Scalable Product Architecture (SPA2). It will bring improvements and new benefits in various aspects, starting from a smoother and more comfortable driving experience, considering that aspect has been a bit of an issue in the current generation.
When it comes to size, we presume that the new model will be bigger, but the actual changes should be marginal, considering that the current model already features respectable dimensions for the class.
In terms of the styling, we count on the evolution of the current design, rather than on some radical changes. The overall shape will certainly remain the same, but the front face will be slightly revised, particularly in terms of headlights and grill, which should bring a more futuristic appearance. Also, keep in mind that the all-new 2023 Volvo XC90 will be also available in a fully-electric version, which would probably feature some exclusive details.
2023 Volvo XC90 Electric
It is all about the cleaner environment when it is up to Volvo. Their moves are promising a green future. It hasn’t started recently. However, treatment in their homeland of Sweden is different than in all other parts of the world. You are getting a free ticket for a ride in urban areas and downtowns, electric parking slots are always closer to the entrance, and the license lasts longer in Scandinavian countries for owners of EVs. Well, change of habits is also notable in the US. The recharging network is growing, and we can hear that more funds will be invested in refundable taxes. Currently, you can save up to $7,500 when buying an electric vehicle. It will depend on a few factors.
The 2023 Volvo XC90 Electric is still just a rumor, without any specs or recharging details. We can find some clues on the Polestar 3 project, but again, range and other specification data were not released. On the other hand, experts confirm that Polestar 3 and XC90 are going to share the platform.
Facelift, Interior, Colors
The new look is certain for the 2023 Volvo XC90. The SUV needs an update to keep up with German rivals in the mid-size luxury class. You can find seven-seaters at more attractive prices, but Lexus, Acura, Lincoln, nor Cadillac can match what Volvo is going to bring to the table. The manufacturer is not saving on features for the entry-level model to lower the cost.
The interior is already full of advanced features and upscale materials. The designers will focus on the new layout of seats and try to provide more comfort. The vehicle is 195 inches long, and the next-gen could make it even larger. On the other hand, we expect the XC100 to become the first Volvo vehicle to be at least 200 inches bumper-to-bumper.
Momentum, R-Design and Inscription are coming back for the all-new vehicle. The same nameplates don’t mean the same packages. The 2023 Volvo XC90 might introduce a higher level of autonomous drive. Level 4 was mentioned some while ago. The highlights are a big touchscreen display and 19-inch wheels (Momentum), premium audio and Nappa leather (R-Design), and ventilated front buckets with massage function (Inscription).
2023 Volvo XC90 Specs
While everyone is waiting for the Recharge EV, the 2023 Volvo XC90 will continue to use a four-cylinder engine as the only power source. Well, this is one of the downsides. Many fans are looking for V6 or even V8 configurations. But, don’t let the lack of cylinders trick you. The XC90 can get up to 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque with the T8 setup. It is the plug-in hybrid, where electric support boosts a supercharged engine. A 2.0-liter four-pot is also available with turbochargers only. This one is called T6 and delivers 315 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission is going to forward power to all wheels in either T6 or T8 layout.
2023 Volvo XC90 Prices, Release Date
The MSRP of the new SUV will depend on the level of changes we see. The T6 configuration is going to start under $60,000. All other upgrades are making the 2023 Volvo XC90 pretty expensive. For example, the Inscription version will add around $10k in features, and one of them could be autonomous drive, replacing a current pilot assist. The SUV is going to introduce a new look by the end of 2023.
