2022 Ford Super Duty: Upgrades, Release Date, & Changes. The 2022 Ford Super Duty may be a family truck for some or a vehicle for another. Even a status symbol in some places but heavy-duty trucks still offer tow and pickup capabilities with almost endless possibilities.
Interestingly competition from the biggest and strongest truck makers in Detroit’s Ram 2500HD, Chevy Silverado 2500HD, and GMC Sierra 2500HD.
The source of the alluring 2022 Ford Super Duty truck is thanks to the tough looks of the 1-2 combo and the available engines that can pull up to 37,000 pounds are very attractive and a lot of people talk about.
Not much has changed for Super Duty this year compared to last year. Ford still offers trucks in F-250, F-350, and F-450 configurations. The truck is available in single or dual rear wheel configuration with regular as well as extended or crew body cab styles depending on the trim level or model.
2022 Ford Super Duty Engine
The F-250 and F-350 come standard with 6.2-liter V-8 petrol that produces 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. While the six-speed automatic is the base transmission, most Super D Duties have a 10-speed automatic gearbox. All powertrains are paired with rear or four-wheel drive, and all models can be equipped with more powerful engine options.
These include the gas-powered 7.3-liter V-8 developing 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft as well as the mighty 6.7-liter V-8 Power Stroke diesel that calls out 475 horses and an astonishing– and class-leading– 1,050 lb-ft of torque. Super Duty also offers an off-road package– Called Tremor– which adds a slimmer lift and tire kit along with other road-ready upgrades.
This heavy-duty Ford performs as expected of a big rig built to pull up to 19 tonnes. When unloaded, the ride is stiff and rocky, but that sensation is lost when the bed is filled or the trailer is installed. The fanciest trim does a better job of absorbing wind and road noise on the road, but all models– even those with optional adaptive steering that Ford says is “more connected and attractive”– have a feeling of on-road weight exacerbated by feedback helmet that broke.
The trucks we drive benefit from solid, responsive brake pedals, and steering is adjustable at low speeds and in tight spaces where maneuvering the longest models can be difficult.
People who want heavy-duty pickup trucks are different from people who need heavy-duty pickup trucks. Because these truck types have a wide variety of capabilities and configurations, our truck of choice emphasizes practicality and price.
That put us in the F-250 with a crew cabin, a 6.75 ft cargo bed, and a single rear axle. To enjoy luxuries like leather upholstery and dual-zone climate control, we opted for the Lariat trim level. It also features a 10-speaker B&O audio system and an 8.0-inch display in the gauge cluster.
The optional Power Stroke diesel engine has enormous torque, it requires a significant investment which we think is unnecessary. Instead, we’ll opt for the optional 7.3-liter V-8, which has more horsepower and torque than the standard 6.2-liter. It also features a 10-speed automatic versus an older six-speed automatic.
Together with four-wheel drive, our F-250 Lariat will be equipped with the FX4 Off-Road and Lariat Value packages. Together they added all-terrain tires, a higher ratio rear axle, and electronic locker, heated and ventilated front seats, LED cargo bed lights, remote engine start, and more.
2022 Ford Super Duty MPG
Since the EPA does not test vehicles as heavy as Super Duty and its major competitors, we can only judge them based on our own tests. Now that Ford has overhauled the powertrain options for its heavy-duty pickup trucks, we’ll have to wait until we get a new one to evaluate their real-world mpg on our highway fuel-efficient routes.
The gasoline-powered 6.2-liter V-8 engine with six-speed automatic remains the standard-setting on the F-250 model, and the last one we tested delivered 15 mpg on the road. In comparison, the gas-powered Chevy Silverado 2500HD made 14 mpg in the same test.
We expect the optional Power Stroke diesel from Super Duty to be the most fuel-efficient engine in its lineup.
2022 Ford Super Duty Redesign
Super Duty Ford is broadly more powerful and capable than ever and 2022 Ford Super Duty currently holds the torque and crane crown. Equipped with the Power Stroke diesel engine produces 1,050 lb-ft of torque and the strongest model can pull 37,000 pounds. Those two stats are slightly better than the Ram HD version and the heavy-duty version of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra.
Super Duty works best for being a multipurpose truck that can be configured as a stripped workstation or a really fancy crane and everything in between. Along with the diesel engine option is the standard 6.2-liter V-8 petrol producing 430 lb-ft of torque or the optional 7.3-liter V-8 petrol producing 475 lb-ft.
All of that capability, plus a myriad of modern technology and an apartment-sized crew cabin makes it easy to see past the cheap passages and awkward road habits of the cabin.
All models are now available in Antimatter Blue, Carbonized Gray, and Lithium Gray. The base model with dual rear axles the XL Power Equipment package adds a trailer crane mirror with heated glass and a folding and telescope function that can be adjusted manually. All Super Duty models can now be equipped with bunk beds as well.
2022 Ford Super Duty Specs
It should be noted that all Ford Super Duty trucks can be equipped with four-wheel drive and rear-wheel drive is standard equipment. Ford offers two gas engines and one diesel engine in its Super Duty. The base engine is a 6.2-liter V-8 producing 385 hp and 430 lb-ft.
This is standard on all trucks except the Limited trim level, which is only available with the turbodiesel.
The 6.2-liter gas is paired with a 6 or 10-speed automatic transmission, with a rear or four-wheel drive. It is comparable to other base V-8s from other truck makers, and its appeal is its relatively low cost and available payload capacity of up to 7,850 pounds (F-350, dual rear wheel, 4 × 2 configuration). It is the lightest and fastest of the bunch, in relative terms.
Waste engines prefer more power or more power. You choose.
The available 7.3-liter V-8 produces 430 hp and 475 lb-ft is sent to the rear or all four wheels via a 10-speed automatic. It can pull in up to 28,000 pounds if equipped properly, and it’s a strong– but very thirsty– performer.
It’s a smooth engine, but its best service life is in the larger commercial trucks that need more power than the 6.2-liter V-8 can provide. A 7.3-liter engine is available in trucks equipped with the off-road Tremor package, which may have smoother off-road power than turbodiesel.
By the way, the 6.7-liter turbodiesel is rugged. It is the most expensive engine available on Super Duty (standard on Limited trucks) and makes 470 hp and 1,050 lb-ft.
This is paired with a 10-speed automatic that transmits power to the rear or all four wheels when equipped. This can carry up to 37,000 pounds, provided your CDL can handle it. Turbodiesel doesn’t put much effort into hauling a typical trailer, but we found that the 15-tonne mass strapped to a truck can be grueling. (Really, who wouldn’t be taxed the ₤ 30,000?).
We have had a few complaints with the 10-speed automatic found on most trucks. Most can hunt gears, even in crane/carry mode.
Steering Super Duty is a breeze, thanks to optional hydraulic assistance that can help the truck more maneuver at slower speeds, and less fuss at higher speeds.
Of course, negotiating anything longer than 20 feet would be homework. Super duty can not be separated from physics, and the big truck is not suitable for many city roads.
2022 Ford Super Duty Exterior.
The 2022 Ford Super Duty is a big, boxy, brash pickup with right angles and headlights. The interior is a comparative disappointment, but mostly because other truck makers have changed their heavy-duty offerings while Ford has remained the same for several years now. Here’s 6 for style.
The Super Duty trim levels differ in exterior accents, chrome, and color schemes, but all of the heavy-duty lineups shares the same side plate and box corners. The Blue Oval badge stuck into the nose was blocked by everything that was the size of a billboard: C-shaped lamps framing a large grille; sans-serif, 200-point “SUPER DUTY” stamped on the hood; and a larger version stamped on the tailgate, in case you’ve forgotten.
It’s hard to mistake Super Duty for anything other than a truck just on the outside, but the inside is a different story.
The cabin is straightforward and simple, although the top trim makes up for some surfaces. Ford still uses some hard plastic in visible places, which is something its competitors have avoided in its newer iterations.
This year, the Ford F-150 received a much-needed interior update. We hope it will stream to Super Duty from next year.
2022 Ford Super Duty Interior.
Fashion and function live in harmony in Super Duty, with a sharp dashboard design and practical layout. Even the stripped-down Super Duty interior is an ergonomic environment with direct controls and materials meant to get messy.
The process simply starts with the Lariat level trim which introduces leather upholstery seats and high-end options like ambient lighting, heated and cooled front seats, and wireless charging. Get ready for a premium King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited to unlock features that other competitors don’t have (such as massage chairs) and feel like royalty. Still, some chintzy pieces make even the coolest model interior.
Buyers have a choice of two-bed sizes (6.75 ft or 8 ft box), but a regular cabin can only be equipped with a long box. Many of the Super Duty multi-purpose cubes and trays are highlighted by the large center console holder on models with bucket seats. The crew cabin takes storage a step further with a lockable box under the rear seat.
All Super Duty models except the base XL come standard with a user-friendly 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and are packed with features including Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Wi-Fi hotspot. It can also be upgraded with the 10-speaker B&O (Bang & Olufsen) stereo and SiriusXM satellite radio, which requires a paid subscription after the first three months.
A large pair of volume and tuning buttons and other physical buttons on the steering wheel make the system feel intuitive. Larger cabs can be equipped with enough accessory outlets to light up Guns N ‘Roses’ concerts, including up to two 110 volt power points.
2022 Ford Super Duty Price and Release Date.
With a variety of cabin and cargo bed configurations, Super Duty has a wide range of maximum towing and payload capacities. Each version offers generous ratings in both categories,.
But Ford fans who want the most impressive numbers will appreciate that the strongest Super Duty can carry a payload of 7850 pounds, tow up to 24,200 pounds with a conventional trailer hitch, and carry a massive 37,000 pounds on its fifth wheel and gooseneck hitch.
The Super Duty starts with a low spec XL work truck for around $ 35,000 and builds onto the XLT, Lariat, Platinum, King Ranch, and Limited trims that are closer to $ 90,000.
Three engines are also available: the 6.2-liter gas-powered V-8, the 7.3-liter gas-powered V-8, or the 6.7-liter turbodiesel V-8. It’s enough to overwhelm any spreadsheet, but short of length: the 6.2-liter V-8 is a payload champion (largely due to its lower curb weight) and loads of capabilities;.
The 7.3-liter V-8 powerhouse is perfect for workplace details or hauling large campers into the middle of nowhere; The turbodiesel is champion towing and can carry up to 37,000 pounds and post 1,050 lb-ft of torque for bragging rights on the driveway.
The worker truck feels up to the task, while the top trim is extravagant– albeit huge.
Super Duty is commendable among its competitors for including standard automatic emergency braking on most trims. Most blind-spot monitors are also included. That’s great because they’re indispensable in large carriers.
The base truck costs about $ 35,000, but it’s a spartan hauler with job specifications that only appeal to fleet buyers. Most Super Duty trucks will cost over $ 40,000 and include some attractive extras for haulers, weekend fighters, or foremen and work ladies.
Our pick is the Super Duty XLT model which offers enough to get the job done without sacrificing much for creature comfort– while maintaining a fair price.
For more, or maybe without any work intentions (no assessment here), Lariat and Limited trucks rival some luxury cars with wheels up to 20 inches, skins everywhere, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen with smartphone compatibility software.
